How to tell if your transmission is going bad

It’s an unfortunate fact that all vehicles will have some sort of issue at some point, as repeated wear and tear out on the open road is just a recipe for damage as time goes on. One issue you may run into is a bad transmission, which will happen after awhile if your vehicle hasn’t been properly maintained or if it was installed incorrectly. Take a look at some warning signs below on how to tell that your transmission is going bad!

Transmission fluid is red, so if you notice a red leak coming from under the hood it’s probably the transmission fluid. It will be accompanied by a unique smell as well. This needs to be corrected as soon as possible, because fixing a transmission leak will be a cheaper fix than repairing a blown transmission.

Another sign that can point you in the direction of transmission failure is a grinding noise under the hood. This can be due to a number of reasons, but one of those is a transmission failure due to slipping as it tries finding a gear. With this grinding noise you may also notice a jolting/jerking feel, because the vehicle isn’t in the correct gear. This is a serious issue that needs to be corrected before any further damage is done.
