Who owns Mercedes-Benz?

Mercedes-Benz is quite the brand, and we often wonder who’s behind it all. Who’s pulling the strings? Is there a mysterious hooded figure? A vast and ominous organization? Aliens? Lizard people?

Join us on the journey to find out as we determine once and for all: who owns Mercedes-Benz?

Companies and Individuals That Own Mercedes-Benz

Mercedes-Benz is owned by the Daimler Group, previously known as Daimler AG and often referred to simply as Daimler. In addition to Mercedes-Benz models, Daimler produces a wide range of other high-quality vehicles, including cars, busses, and motorcycles.

The current CEO of Daimler is a man named Ola Källenius, a Swedish business executive. However, as CEOs often like to point out, they are not actually the owners of the company for which they work. Daimler is really owned by shareholders. The company is primarily owned by European, U.S. and other international inventors. As of December 31, 2019, more than one billion shares of the company were currently circulating.

Those shareholders can claim to play a part in the production of these excellent vehicles.

Why is Mercedes-Benz owned by Daimler?

Karl Benz stands proudly with his "Patent Motorwagen" sign

To understand the relationship between Daimler and Mercedes-Benz, we must to go back to the origins of both companies. Way back in 1886, Karl Benz created what some see as the first internal combustion engine in a car (this claim is disputed, however). Benz patented the engine in 1886. Later that same year, a man named Gottlieb Daimler and engineer Wilhelm Maybach converted a stagecoach with the addition of a petrol engine.

In 1901, Daimler Motors Corporation began to market Benz’s patented gas-powered automobile to the public. They called it the Mercedes, named after the daughter of racer Emil Jellinek, who drove the vehicle in a race.

In 1926, Karl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler’s companies merged to form the Daimler-Benz company. It was at this time that they produced the first Mercedes-Benz brand name vehicles. To this day, both Daimler AG and the Mercedes-Benz Corporation are headquartered in Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg, Germany.
