AMG® GT vs. SL Roadster — which AMG® should I buy?

The Mercedes-AMG® GT is the more track-focused of the two — a 2+2 coupe built by AMG® with hand-built V8 power, fixed-roof aerodynamics, and a chassis tuned for performance driving. Starting MSRP is around $135,000. The Mercedes-AMG® SL Roadster is the grand-tourer counterpart — also built by AMG® and powered by V8, but as a 2+2 fabric-roof convertible engineered for open-top luxury cruising. Starting MSRP is around $120,000 and climbs above $190,000 in higher trims. Choose the AMG® GT if your priority is performance — track days, canyon drives, and the most focused AMG® driving experience. Choose the SL Roadster if you want the same AMG® soul in an open-top grand tourer.

Side-by-side: at a glance

  • Starting MSRP: AMG GT ~$135,000 / SL Roadster ~$120,000 (higher SL trims climb well above $190,000).
  • Body style: AMG® GT is a 2+2 fixed-roof coupe / SL Roadster is a 2+2 fabric-top convertible.
  • Engineering origin: Both are built by Mercedes-AMG® in Affalterbach, Germany — the difference is character, not pedigree.
  • Engine options: Both offer hand-built AMG® V8 (4.0L biturbo) variants. The SL also offers a four-cylinder option in some markets.
  • Driving character: AMG® GT is set up for performance — sharper steering, firmer suspension, race-derived chassis tuning. SL Roadster is set up for grand touring — smoother ride, more isolated cabin, comfort-tilted dynamics.
  • Top: AMG® GT is a fixed roof. SL Roadster is a power-operated fabric soft top that lowers in about 15 seconds.
  • Seating: Both are 2+2 — two adults up front, two small jump seats in back useful for occasional short trips or luggage.

Choose the AMG® GT if…

  • Track days, autocross, or canyon drives are part of how you actually use the car.
  • You want the most focused AMG® driving experience built — a vehicle engineered first for performance, second for everything else.
  • You prefer the visual presence of a fixed-roof GT car.
  • You want the AMG® GT’s chassis precision and the way the fixed roof contributes to torsional rigidity at speed.
  • You’re considering the AMG® GT 63 PRO or other higher-output variants.

Choose the SL Roadster if…

  • Top-down driving on Arizona evenings, canyon runs, and West Coast trips is part of the appeal.
  • You want AMG® performance without giving up grand-touring comfort.
  • You value the SL’s heritage — the SL nameplate is one of the most storied in Mercedes-Benz history.
  • You want a more flexible daily driver — the SL handles long highway distances and city driving more easily than the focused AMG® GT.
  • You prefer the visual statement of a convertible roadster over a fixed-roof coupe.

What about the AMG® GT Coupe (4-door) and other AMG® variants?
