AMG® Line vs. AMG®: What’s the Difference on a Mercedes-Benz?
Quick answer: AMG® Line is a styling package on a regular Mercedes-Benz: sportier bumpers, larger wheels, sport seats and AMG®-style details, with the standard engine. A Mercedes-AMG® model (badged 35, 43, 53 or 63) is a performance vehicle engineered by AMG®, with more power, upgraded suspension and brakes, and AMG®-specific tuning. If you want the look, AMG® Line delivers it. If you want the performance, choose an AMG®.
What AMG® Line includes
Contents vary by model and year, but AMG® Line typically adds:
- AMG® body styling with sportier front and rear bumpers
- Larger AMG®-design wheels
- Sport seats and a sport steering wheel
- Sportier interior trim and pedals
- On some models, sport suspension or sport-tuned steering
The engine, transmission and brakes stay the same as the standard model.
What makes a Mercedes-AMG® different
- More power: AMG®-tuned engines, up to the hand-built V8s in 63 models
- Performance chassis: AMG® suspension, larger brakes and performance all-wheel drive
- AMG® drive modes and sound, tuned for track-level driving
- The badge on the trunk: “AMG®” followed by the number, such as AMG® GLC 43

How to tell them apart on the lot
Look at the trunk badge and the window sticker. An AMG® Line car carries the regular model name (GLC 300) with “AMG® Line” listed as a package. A Mercedes-AMG® carries the AMG® model name (AMG® GLC 43) and is listed as a Mercedes-AMG® vehicle. The front grille is another tell on many models: AMG® performance models often use a vertical-slat Panamericana grille.
What about the Night Package?
The Night Package swaps chrome exterior trim for gloss black, often with dark wheels. It pairs well with AMG® Line for a blacked-out look, and is available on many AMG® models too. It changes the appearance, not the performance.
Which is right for you?
- Choose AMG® Line if you love the sporty look and want the efficiency, comfort and lower price of the standard engine.
- Choose Mercedes-AMG® if acceleration, handling and sound are why you are shopping.
The best way to decide is to drive both back to back. Mercedes-Benz of Gilbert is home to an AMG® Performance Center. Browse AMG® inventory, schedule a test drive, or call (480) 407-5800.
