Mercedes-Benz Dashboard Warning Lights: What Each One Means

October 1st, 2026 by

Quick answer: Mercedes-Benz warning lights follow a color code. Red means stop safely as soon as you can and do not keep driving. Yellow or amber means something needs attention soon, but the car is usually safe to drive to service. Green, blue or white is information only, telling you a feature is on. When a light comes on, your instrument cluster almost always shows a text message with it. Read that message first, because it tells you exactly which system needs attention.

Red warning lights: stop when it is safe

A red light means a problem that can damage the car or affect your safety if you keep driving. Pull over somewhere safe, turn the engine off, and call for help.

  • Brake warning (red circle with an exclamation point or “BRAKE”): low brake fluid or a brake system fault. If the parking brake is fully released and this stays on, do not drive.
  • Coolant temperature (thermometer in liquid): the engine is overheating. Stop, let it cool, and do not open the coolant cap while it is hot.
  • Engine oil pressure (oil can): oil pressure is too low. Driving even a short distance can damage the engine.
  • Charging system (battery symbol): the battery is not being charged. You may have only minutes of driving left before the car shuts down.
  • Seat belt: someone in the car is not buckled in. This one you can fix yourself.
  • Restraint system (person with an airbag): the airbag or seat belt tensioner system has a fault and may not work in a crash. Have it checked right away.

Yellow warning lights: book service soon

Yellow lights are the car asking for attention. Most are safe to drive on carefully, but do not ignore them for weeks.

  • Check engine (engine outline): the engine or emissions system has logged a fault. A steady light means book service soon. A flashing check engine light means a misfire that can damage the catalytic converter, so slow down and get it in quickly.
  • Tire pressure (horseshoe with an exclamation point): one or more tires is low. Check pressures with a gauge and fill to the numbers on the driver’s door jamb.
  • ESP® (car with wavy lines): flashing briefly means stability control is working on a slippery road. Staying on means the system has a fault or has been switched off.
  • ABS: anti-lock braking is not working. Normal brakes still work, but give yourself more stopping distance.
  • Low fuel: you are on reserve. Your remaining range shows in the cluster.
  • Service due (wrench): your scheduled Service A or Service B is due. The message tells you which and how many days or miles are left.
  • Driver assistance systems: a sensor or camera may be blocked by dirt, dust or a bug strike. Clean the front grille, windshield camera area and bumpers, then restart the car.

Green, blue and white lights: information only

These simply confirm that something is on: headlights, high beams (blue), cruise control or DISTRONIC, turn signals, ECO start/stop, or HOLD. Nothing needs fixing.

What to do when a light comes on

  1. Read the text message in the instrument cluster. It names the system.
  2. Note the color. Red means stop. Yellow means book service.
  3. Check the basics you can see: gas cap tight, tire pressures, seat belts, parking brake released.
  4. Look it up in your owner’s manual. Every symbol for your exact model is listed there. Here is how to access your Mercedes-Benz owner’s manual on your phone or in the car.
  5. Book a diagnosis for anything red, flashing, or that comes back after a restart.

Can I clear a warning light myself?

Some lights clear on their own once the cause is fixed, like a tire pressure light after you fill the tires, or a check engine light after a loose gas cap is tightened and the car completes a few drive cycles. A light that keeps coming back is the car telling you the cause is still there. Clearing the code without fixing the problem only hides it.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to drive with the check engine light on?

If it is steady and the car drives normally, it is usually safe to drive to service soon. If it is flashing, or the car is shaking or losing power, slow down and have it checked right away.

Why did my warning light turn off by itself?

The fault may have been temporary, like a sensor reading during extreme heat. The car still stores the code, so mention it at your next visit.

Where can I see every symbol for my model?

In your owner’s manual, available in the Mercedes-Benz app and in the MBUX system in the car.
