What brand are the cargo vans used by the USPS?

United States Postal Service Customized Mercedes-Benz Metris Cargo Vans

You may have noticed the USPS driving around the streets here in Gilbert in some very spiffy new rides. Sure, the near-ancient Grumman LLVs are still in operation as well (for the time-being), but some lucky mail carriers are now getting to complete their routes behind the wheel of a stylish, luxurious cargo van with a custom-made USPS emblem on the front. From which brand do these swanky machines hail?

United States Postal Service Customized Mercedes-Benz Metris Cargo Vans

The USPS is currently using a rather hefty number of Mercedes-Benz Metris cargo vans to augment its fleet and help replace the near-death Grumman LLVs. A few years back, the USPS contracted the purchase of over 17,300 Mercedes-Benz Metris vans. On top of that, the postal service retained the option to buy 12,600 more vans with a second contract. As a result, we may be seeing a total of 30,608 Metris vans delivering mail by 2022.

Why is the USPS using Mercedes-Benz Metris to deliver mail?

The USPS opted to purchase a bodacious bevy of Mercedes-Benz Metris vans because the organization determined it to be an effective delivery vehicle sure to enhance the capabilities of its delivery fleet; David Mills, Chief Executive of the USPS, has basically said as much.

Is the new mail truck going to be a Mercedes-Benz van?

No, the Mercedes-Benz Metris is not going to serve as the primary next-generation postal delivery machine. Instead, about ten percent of the entire postal route fleet will remain Metris, while the majority of the fleet will be replaced with a next-gen version of the LLV mail truck.

How are the Mercedes-Benz Metris postal vans outfitted?

The vans used by the USPS aren’t just any old Mercedes-Benz Metris models, of course. They are Metris COTS right-hand drive vehicles, outfitted with a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine under the hood. Postal vehicles have to be right-hand drive in order to most easily get mail into the waiting mailboxes.

The front of the Mercedes-Benz Metris models used by the postal service also boast a USPS logo badge in place of the Mercedes-Benz badge, which is a cool little dose of customization.
